A conversation with Waad al-Kateab, director of For Sama, a powerful documentary on the Syrian uprising. The story is defined by a personal and distinctly female perspective. For Sama premiere last year and since then, it has gained worldwide acclaim, including being awarded the main prize at the recent inaugural edition of the International Migration Film Festival. The reaction prompted al-Kateab to birth a new initiative titled Action for Sama, to raise awareness of the continued targeting of healthcare facilities in Syria. In this interview, we talk about that as well as other things, including the dangers of documenting the uprising and her experiences of being a mother during those violent years.
