Highlights from the 81st Venice Film Festival Collateral Awards.

The collateral awards of the 81st Venice Film Festival have just been presented. Below are the films that received the most important of these awards:

Pietro Bianchi Award 2024

The 2024 Pietro Bianchi Award, the recognition that the Italian Film Journalists (SNGCI) traditionally assign at the Lido, this year for its 48th edition, to an excellent personality of Italian cinema, went to Nanni Moretti.

FEDIC Award | Federazione Italiana dei Cineclub

The FEDIC Award for “the work that best reflects the creative autonomy and expressive freedom of the author” went to:

FIPRESCI Award | FIPRESCI – International Federation of Film Critics

Every year since 1948, at the Venice International Film Festival, some members of FIPRESCI, the international federation of the film press, have awarded a prize to what they consider to be the best film to support the most “risky, original and personal” cinema.

This year, the award went to:

  • Best film of Orizzonti or parallel sections went to “The New Year That Never Came” by Bogdan Muresanu
  • Best film of Venezia 81 went to: “The Brutalist” by Brady Corbet

Leoncino d’Oro Award | Agiscuola/UNICEF

The Leoncino d’Oro intended to bring young people closer to cinema goes to “The Quiet Son” by Delphine e Muriel Coulin
Cinema for UNICEF Special Mention: “Familia” by Francesco Costabile

Francesco Pasinetti Award | Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani

The Pasinetti Award is one of the collateral awards of the Venice International Film Festival. It is dedicated to Francesco Pasinetti, an Italian director, screenwriter, film critic, and photographer. The National Union of Italian Film Journalists (SNGCI) assigns the award.

This year, the Premio Pasinetti went to “Iddu” by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza
Best Actress: Romana Maggiora Vergano for Il tempo che ci vuole by Francesca Comencini

Queer Lion Award | Associazione di Promozione Sociale Queer Lion

The 18. Queer Lion Award – a collateral prize of the 81st Venice International Film Festival, created in 2007 by Daniel N. Casagrande – was awarded to the film “Alma del Desierto” by Mónica Taboada-Tapia.

GDA Director’s Award | Giornate degli Autori

The GdA Director’s Award winner of the twenty-first edition of the Giornate is Manas by Marianna Brennand, which shines the spotlight on an unknown province of Brazil, setting a story of universal value there.

“While in the competition of Venezia 81, Brazil is represented by Walter Salles,” say Giorgio Gosetti and Gaia Furrer, respectively general delegate and artistic director of the Giornate, “our jury has awarded an emerging author produced by Salles and the Dardenne brothers. A story that seems to recall the official image of the Giornate: a girl balancing on the tightrope between repeated acts of violence and a social system that justifies them. A story about courage and emancipation, about sisterhood that from a remote place reaches the heart of the jury, of the president Joanna Hogg and of all of us.”
