A conversation with filmmaker Tea Lukač about her latest feature film Roots. The film is screening as part of the East of the West Competition at the 2021 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Roots is an intimate portrait where different sets of people share stories and conversate at the back of a moving car, as it crosses the town of Dvor in Croatia. In this conversation, Lukač talks more about this concept and her personal connection to the Dvor, the importance of nature in this film and more.
Roots : A silent landscape flashes past the windows of a moving car conveying different sets of passengers. The conversations veer towards such diverse themes as carol-singing, nuclear waste, and the dangers of hornets’ nests. Tea Lukač’s anthropological probe gets by with a minimum of cinematic devices in order to deliver a focused study of the phenomena of memory, history and tradition.
