Navigando liberamente attraverso le immagini prodotte dal PCI tra gli anni ‘50 e gli ‘80 da grandi registi italiani e incontrando lo sguardo di Luciana Castellina, storica dirigente comunista, fondatrice del Manifesto, mai ortodossa e ancora oggi instancabile animatrice politica, Giovanni Piperno si chiede cosa sia stato quel “partito-giraffa”, come lo definì una volta Togliatti, e soprattutto cosa rimanga oggi di un’esperienza che ha coinvolto milioni di persone nel tentativo di trasformare sé stessi e il mondo. Nel viaggio riscopre il senso di una politica fatta di impegno, solidarietà, confronto. E, soprattutto, riscopre il cinema di quella generazione politica: un cinema libero, sperimentale, dal basso, empatico, militante. Come dice Zavattini nel film: “un cinema di tanti per tanti”.
