“Conversation with” at the 20th Marrakech IFF, interview with actor Willem Dafoe Bénédicte Prot
PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews photojournalist Ron Haviv and professor Lauren Walsh at the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival.
Ron Haviv, photojournalist, and Lauren Walsh, professor at New York University, are collaborating on a documentary titled Biography of a Photo, currently in production. They presented their project at CineLink during the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival, where they also gave a talk titled “From Photography to Film.”
In Biography of a Photo, their first feature, the main characters are two photographs, both taken by Haviv: one from Panama in 1989 and the other from Bosnia in 1992. Through them, Haviv and Walsh explore the afterlives of images, what they reveal about how societies move forward beyond trauma, how visual media shape our political and social lives and more. In this interview, they discuss some of these themes.
Other topics discussed include the definition of iconic photography, the challenges of shooting the documentary, Haviv’s personal relationship to the photographs he took and how this has evolved over time, and more.
