PODCAST | Matteo Ghidoni interviews President and CEO of Istituto Luce Cinecittà, Roberto Cicutto.
Roberto Cicutto shares his experience on the occasion of ITALIAN STORIES DAY, this year taking place in Los Angeles on 25th June 2019, and also explains us how much films, tv series and literature are closer than in the past. Italian creativity and Italian stories are liked from audiences all over the world. For the first time in history, lately, new movies released in local languages and dialects are liked and followed by a large number of people in several countries. Also thanks to subtitles, language barriers are now more subtle in the world of cinema and tv. Immigration from Italy has been huge in US history, so many people feels very close to our country and they love to see audiovisual contents with an Italian DNA.
Istituto Luce Cinecittà is a public company that works as an operative arm of the Ministry of Culture for the Italian film industry. It is the result of the merging of Cinecittà Holding and Istituto Luce, the latter being the first state film company in Europe, founded in 1924. Istituto Luce Cinecittà is the state-owned company dedicated to the conservation, promotion and support of Italian Cinema worldwide. One of the most important pillars of its heritage and activities is Istituto Luce – Historical Film and Photo Archive made up of numerous collections of newsreels and documentaries in more than 150000 titles ranging from the beginnings of cinema to our days, and some three million photos, covering different events from the 1920s to the 1970s. The archive is constantly engaged in acquisition from a variety of sources, cataloguing and digitization and hundreds of thousands of films and photos are available online for free at www.archivioluce.com. For the exceptional cultural and historical value of its film heritage, the Archive is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
Istituto Luce Cinecittà distributes and supports domestically the theatrical releases of Italian first and second time feature films; moreover, institutional work includes promoting Italian cinema both at home and abroad by means of retrospectives dedicated to the great authors, actors and personalities of the past and their classic films, as well contemporary ones, in collaboration with the most prestigious international institutions, including the Academy of Motion Pictures, Art & Sciences, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the London BFI, the Cinematheque Française in Paris. Istituto Luce Cinecittà cooperates with major film festival such as Cannes, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Shanghai, Tokyo, Locarno, New York, London. Since July 2017 Istituto Luce Cinecittà is in charge of managing the legendary Cinecittà Studios and postproduction labs, founded 80 years ago (1937), property for 20 years of a private company.
