Listen to an extract from the panel “Cross-Atlantic Series Success: (Re)making TV for Europe and the World” from the EFM Industry Debates of the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival.
In this extract, Philip Steffens, supervising producer of the big German broadcasting channel RTL talks about the risks in making TV serials that are more daring and less traditionally appealing, by using the example of RTL produced series Deutschland 83, which was very successful abroad but somewhat underwhelming in Germany.
The boom in high-end television series has ignited a creative explosion in Europe, and opened up new opportunities for producers and talent to sell their shows – as originals or adaptations – worldwide. But what does a show need to stand out? What are international broadcasters looking for and how can you make – or remake – a world-class series on a European budget.
