Morgan Matthews – Director – X + Y (X plus Y)

FRED’s Matt Micucci meets director Morgan Matthews who talks about his fiction narrative feature directorial debut X PLUS Y, presented at the 58th edition of the BFI London Film Festival. He tells us about making the big jump from documentary filmmaking to fiction filmmaking and how his background in documentary influenced his approach in making this film. He also talks to us about understanding the mechanics and logics of love through the his young central character’s love of mathematics and about working with actors in a constructively collaborative way.

X PLUS Y is the story of a socially awkward teenage math prodigy finds new confidence and new friendships when he lands a spot on the British squad at the International Mathematics Olympiad.
