Matthew McCounaghey, Actor, Dallas Buyers Club.
Oscar Nominated Matthew McCounaghey has been in Rome to present the italian release of DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, the film that brought him his first Golden Globe and got him nominated for the Academy Award 2014.
Fred’s very own Chiara Nicoletti had a chat with him after an intense, well-attended and exhaustive press conference where he told the journalists every insight on the making of the film, his thoughts, preparation and difficulties.
The script of Dallas Buyers Club has been around and ready for almost 20 years. Matthew McCounaghey himself have tried to make the film for 5 years and the first time he read the script, he wrote the following words on the cover : “THIS HAS FANGS” as a reminder of the devouring and fighting power of the story.
When being asked why it took so long for investors to finaliy join this production McCounaghey answers: film investors , especially the Studios want to invest their money in good and valid stories but at the same time they want their investment to produce some money in return. However, when you think that the film was introduced as an HIV drama – Historic biopic on an homophobic man, you can see why they didn’t get attached right away.
After working with Friedkin and Sodenbergh, Jean Marc Vallee’s film seems to be the fulfillment of this chance of direction that McCounaghey’s career has taken. After refusing roles in action movies and romantic comedies, he received no offers for an year after finally delivering the message to Hollywood. The message was that he was looking for a permanent change. Luckily Hollywood saw this change as a fresh and good idea to invest on and eventually the right roles started to knock on his door. Dallas Buyers Club is not a story of a man who’s about to die but it’s about a man ardently fighting to live.
