The legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, an undisputed master of world cinema and the creator of some of the most iconic films in history, will be the guest of honour at the National Museum of Cinema in Turin on October 7 and 8, 2024. Scorsese will receive the prestigious Stella della Mole Award during a gala evening dedicated to him and will hold an exclusive Masterclass, followed by a retrospective of his most celebrated works.
October 7, 2024
October 8, 2024
Tickets for the Masterclass and retrospective will be available starting October 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM on www.museocinema.it and at 4:30 PM on www.cinemamassimotorino.it.
Martin Scorsese is widely regarded as one of the most influential and innovative directors in contemporary cinema. Born in New York in 1942 and raised in the Italian-American neighbourhood of Little Italy, he developed a passion for cinema at a young age, heavily influenced by Italian Neorealism and the great masters such as Rossellini and Fellini. These filmmakers deeply shaped his work, often exploring themes such as Italian-American identity, guilt, redemption, religion, and violence.
Since his involvement in the New Hollywood movement of the 1970s, Scorsese has revolutionized cinematic language, creating masterpieces like Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), and Goodfellas (1990). These films not only redefined gangster cinema and urban drama but also delved into the darker sides of the human psyche and American society.
Scorsese has also established some of film history’s most enduring and celebrated collaborations, particularly with actors like Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. His partnerships with De Niro have produced iconic films such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Cape Fear. At the same time, his work with DiCaprio has resulted in notable films like The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
A winner of numerous international awards, including an Academy Award for Best Director for The Departed (2006), Scorsese has left a profound mark on the history of world cinema. In addition to the Oscar, he has received prestigious accolades such as the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, four BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards, and a Grammy Award.
Scorsese is also a passionate advocate for the preservation of cinematic heritage. In 1990, he founded The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving classic films. Thanks to his passion for film history, he has helped restore over 1,000 films worldwide, ensuring that these works continue to inspire future generations.
“Ever since I sat with my grandparents and parents watching Rossellini’s Paisà on television more than 70 years ago, Italian cinema has held a very special place in my heart, a presence that has guided me, supported me, encouraged me in my work as a filmmaker,” Scorsese said, recalling his love for directors like Rossellini. “It is truly meaningful for me to receive such recognition at this particular moment in my life, in this beautiful museum here in Turin dedicated to the history of one of the great loves of my life: Italian cinema.”
To celebrate Scorsese’s visit, Cinema Massimo will host a retrospective dedicated to the Maestro from October 11 to 13, 2024, featuring a selection of his most iconic works. Scorsese will introduce the retrospective on October 8 with a special talk at 8:00 PM, followed by the screening of one of his most acclaimed films.
With a career over six decades, Martin Scorsese continues influencing and inspiring generations of filmmakers. This event is a unique opportunity for cinema enthusiasts to meet a true master and immerse themselves in the world of one of the most celebrated directors ever.
