The BlackStar Film Festival is an annual event that takes place in Philadelphia and celebrates the visual and storytelling traditions of the African diaspora and of global communities of colour, showcasing films by Black, Brown and Indigenous people from around the world, with a focus on independent filmmaking. This year, the festival will take place mostly online from the 20th to the 20th of August and we talk about its with its founder, artistic director and CEO, Maori Karmael Holmes. In this conversation, we talk about the history of the festival as well as its present, including how BlackStar is responding to the coronavirus crisis and some of the events and screenings that will be featured in this year’s edition.
