Maite Soto – Lecturer of the department of audiovisual and advertising – Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB)

This is an extract from the first FRED at School conference, which took place on the 2nd of July 2015 at the Regent Street Cinema, London, UK.

This extract features Maite Soto, lecturer of the department of audiovisual and advertising of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), partners of the inaugural edition of FRED at School. In this extract, she presents the first results of a work in progress examination which aims to wrap up the first observations on the outcome of the first edition of FRED at School.

The research is based on a two questionnaires filled in by the students of the participating schools from the different countries of the project. They aimed to make observation on topics of general conception about films, knowledge of film production, attitudes towards European cinema, media consumption habits and motivations on going to the cinema. The questions were filled in by teenage students, which as Prof. Maite Soto points out, is an age group where the subject of film literacy has been lacking in observation and research.

She also talks about the challenges of undertaking the task of conducting such a research, and in finding ways to pose the different questions in a way that would be suited to every participating country of the FRED at School project and take into consideration their different perceptions of film and their content. On top of that, Prof. Maite Soto also talks about film literacy in general and raises the topic of reaching a consensus on the meaning of the term “film literacy” which is somewhat lacking, perhaps because it has not been given enough attention as of yet.
