PODCAST| Samantha Sartori interviews Juan Cabral, director of the film Two/One.
At the world premiere of Two/One we met Juan Cabral, one of the most sought–after advertising directors. He wrote and directed the “Gorilla” advert for Cadbury, which was voted as a “Favourite Ad of All Time” in the United Kingdom, and Ikea’s “Beds”, which was one of the most–awarded commercials of the last decade. Two/One is his first feature film. We talked about his interest in sleeping and the question of where we go when we sleep brought him to this journey through the deeply–connected lives and dreams of the protagonists. The movie takes place in two different continents and completely different landscapes: a big city in China and an isolated area in Canada, and we jump between both places without even feeling the distance thanks to perfect and harmonic photography. Juan told us how he met and then worked with Larry Smith (who started his career working with Kubrick and who now works as a DP with many of our favorite contemporary directors like Nicolas Winding Refn).
Two/One: Two men. Living on the exact opposite side of the world. When one sleeps, the other one is awake. But when they finally meet, a simple question arises: Who is the dream and who is the dreamer? Kaden (Boyd Holbrook) is a professional ski jumper in Whistler, Canada, unexpectedly presented with the chance of reconnecting with an ex-girlfriend who ghosted him years ago. Khai (Song Yang) is a corporate executive in Shanghai, China, faced with the fact that the girl he fantasies about on the internet has just started working in his office. The two men go about their lives, without knowing that they are connected, but noticing some echoes – like a distorted mirror. They slowly begin to realize that they might be dreaming each other. They are, in some strange way, the same person.
