This year’s JIFF presents the biggest ever selection of new Australian films, world premieres of three documentaries and five shorts, and TV series. New Jewish filmmaking voices supported via JIFF short film fund with this year’s winners screening as part of a unique showcase shorts slot.

The program includes a focus on Yiddish Culture with two Yiddish language films, SHTTL and Burning Off The Page. JIFF also presents, fresh from Cannes, “The Goldman Case“, “Valeria Gets Married“, winner at Haifa Film Festival and Shanghai Film Festival, and three of the most powerful Holocaust films of the year, “The Zone of Interest“,” Stella. A Life.” and “Filip“.

 


Plot

Per Elisa - Il caso Claps ricostruisce uno dei più sconvolgenti casi di cronaca nera recenti: gli omicidi
di Elisa Claps ed Heather Barnett. Elisa Claps esce di casa per andare a messa in un’assolata domenica mattina nel Settembre 1993 a Potenza. Da quel momento in poi nessuno avrà più sue notizie, fino al ritrovamento del suo corpo 17 anni dopo, nel sottotetto della chiesa dove era stata vista l’ultima volta in vita. Nel Novembre 2002 a Bournemouth, sulla costa meridionale dell’Inghilterra, Heather Barnett, una madre single di due adolescenti, viene trovata in casa a terra, coperta di sangue, orribilmente mutilata.
Il giorno della scomparsa, Elisa Claps aveva appuntamento con Danilo Restivo, poco più grande di lei, proprio nella chiesa dove poi fu ritrovato il suo corpo. Danilo Restivo era anche il vicino di casa di Heather Barnett, e su di lui la polizia inglese appuntò presto i suoi sospetti. Ma ci vollero anni per connettere i due delitti e far condannare il colpevole. Un ruolo fondamentale perché questo avvenisse è stato svolto dalla famiglia Claps e, soprattutto, da Gildo, fratello maggiore di Elisa, che aveva 24 anni all’epoca della scomparsa della sorella. Per Elisa - Il caso Claps è la storia della ininterrotta battaglia di Gildo Claps e della sua famiglia per fare luce sulla scomparsa di Elisa, assicurare il suo assassino alla giustizia e sul perché la verità sia potuta rimanere oscurata per così tanto tempo.
