PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Jerry Rothwell, director of the documentary The Reason I Jump.
An interview with director Jerry Rothwell, who presented his latest documentary, The Reason I Jump, in the international competition in 2020 One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Prague, Czech Republic. The film translates a book of the same name that had been written by Japanese author Naoki Higashida as a child, and illustrates his life and experience of living with autism. In this interview, Rothwell talks about the challenge of translating this book into the film and how meeting the author influenced his work. He also talks about the important sensory dimension of the film, his knowledge on the subject matter before he began working on the project and more.
The Reason I Jump: How do children and adolescents with autistic spectrum disorders experience the world? An illustrative example is provided in a book by Japanese author Naoki Higashida, whose reflections on his own experience with autism led to the making of a film of the same name.
