PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Félix Dufour-Laperrière, director of the film Archipelago.
A conversation with Félix Dufour-Laperrière, director of the animated documentary Archipelago, presented at the 2021 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The animated documentary posits the question of what makes a strip of land a region (and community), with references to his native region of Quebec, Canada. Here, Dufour-Laperrière talks about the eclectic mix of animated styles that defines the movie, his interest in exploring the topic and the research it entailed and more.
Archipelago: “Follow me, I’ll take you to see them all”, a woman’s voice says. She is referring to the Saint Lawrence River and its thousands of islands – real and dreamt. “I’m a capricious guide”, she warns the man, her counterpart. With their dialogue in voice-over, Archipel expands into a semi-fictional odyssey through filmmaker Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s native province: Quebec, captured in a composition of surprising, creative animation using a wide range of techniques and a partly invented documentary.
