In a landmark decision, the European Film Academy Board unanimously selected French actress Juliette Binoche to succeed the esteemed Agnieszka Holland as president. The transition marks a significant moment in the Academy’s history, with Binoche poised to uphold its legacy and champion European cinema on a global stage.
Following Agnieszka Holland’s decision to step down from her role, the Academy swiftly rallied behind Juliette Binoche as the natural successor. Binoche, renowned for her illustrious career spanning decades, brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to filmmaking.
As Agnieszka Holland bids farewell to her tenure, the European Film Academy expresses deep gratitude for her contributions. Holland’s dedication to the Academy’s mission has left an indelible mark, as the current chair of the Board, Mike Downey and Academy CEO Matthijs Wouter Knol said: “On behalf of the European Film Academy, we would like to thank her for her tremendous support, strength and a strong vision in all the functions she has fulfilled within the structure of the Academy. Without this, the work done in the past years would not have been the same – and it would certainly not have been as pleasant.”
Juliette Binoche’s ascension to the presidency signifies a new chapter for the European Film Academy. With a resolute focus on advancing the interests of European filmmakers, Binoche pledges to uphold the Academy’s values and amplify the voices of diverse cinematic storytellers.
In her poignant farewell statement, Agnieszka Holland reaffirms her commitment to the craft of filmmaking. While stepping down from her presidential duties, she expresses confidence in Binoche’s ability to lead with grace and conviction, ensuring a seamless transition for the Academy: “Knowing that Juliette Binoche is willing to pick up the baton strengthens my feeling that this is a decision taken at the right moment. I could not have wished for a better successor, one who represents European cinema so strongly and convincingly throughout her impressive career.”
