PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Kasper Collin, who talks about his new film I Called Him Morgan from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.
Having made a previous documentary on jazzman Albert Ayler, the director got into trumpeter Lee Morgan, famous for his work with jazz combo The Messengers, with Albert Blakey, and his own works as leader. The infamous event that ended his life, on stage during a concert, was his own killing at the hands of his wife Helen Morgan. Making use of a rare taped interview with Helen herself, guest contributions and plenty of archive footage, along with the music (of course), Kasper Collin’s I Called Him Morgan is a documentary by a jazz fan especially for, but not exclusively, jazz fans.
I CALLED HIM MORGAN – On a snowy night in February 1972, celebrated jazz musician Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife Helen during a gig at a club in New York City. The murder sent shockwaves through the jazz community, and the memory of the event still haunts those who knew the Morgans. This feature documentary is a love letter to two unique personalities and the music that brought them together. A film about love, jazz and America.
