A conversation with Diane Sara Bouzgarrou and Thomas Jenkoe, directors of The Last Hillbilly. The documentary has been selected for IDFA 2020. The film offers poetic insight on the American hillbilly culture. In this interview, they share how they approached this project, established a connection with a subject they were unfamiliar with, how the film has acquired new meanings since the tumult of 2020 and more.

The Last Hillbilly: They are viewed as low-skilled hillbillies, poor and violent. Brian Ritchie knows only too well what the rest of the United States thinks of the inhabitants of the Appalachian region. And all the preconceptions are perfectly true, he admits. Nevertheless, The Last Hillbilly also shows that the simple-looking life is anything but simple.
