Celebrating Diversity: FRED Film Radio’s Pride Month Tribute to LGBTQI+ Cinema

As Pride Month dawns, FRED Film Radio proudly joins the global celebration, reaffirming our commitment to amplifying LGBTQI+ voices in cinema. This month, we reflect on the significance of Pride and highlight some of the remarkable LGBTQI+ films and filmmakers we’ve had the honour of interviewing.

Importance of Pride Month to FRED Film Radio

Pride Month is not just a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of representation in all forms of media, including film. At FRED Film Radio, we believe in the transformative power of storytelling and its ability to foster empathy, understanding, and change. By featuring LGBTQI+ filmmakers and their work, we aim to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape.

Spotlight on LGBTQI+ Film Interviews

Over the years, FRED Film Radio has interviewed numerous filmmakers who bring LGBTQI+ stories to the forefront. Here are a few highlights:

Close by Lukas Dhont
  1. Lukas Dhont—“Close”: Lukas Dhont’s second feature, Close, is a homage to friendship. In this interview, the director reveals how he dedicated the film to the friends he lost while growing up and how he got the idea for his second work thanks to his mom, who pushed him to write about what he knows and cares about.
  2. Céline Sciamma—“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”: Renowned director Céline Sciamma shared insights into her superb fourth feature film, the initial idea, the desire to chronicle the birth of love and its memory (and its immensity, its emancipatory force…) with all the tools of staging, to build an alchemy between a loving speech and a speech about love.
  3. David Lambert—“Turtles”: At the Lovers Film Festival, David Lambert discussed his film “Turtles,” which highlights the seldom-seen representation of older queer couples.
  4. Todd Haynes—“Carol”: Todd Haynes discusses the universal effects of falling in love.
  5. Ira Sachs and Franz Rogowski—“Passages”: The director and actor of “Passages” discuss how the film shows that love has no gender. Still, the same goes for jealousy and cheating in relationships.
Passages – Ira Sachs

As we celebrate Pride Month, FRED Film Radio remains dedicated to supporting and showcasing LGBTQI+ filmmakers and their stories. These interviews are just a few examples of how we can promote diversity and inclusion in the cinematic world. Join us this month in honouring the voices that continue to inspire and drive change through the art of film.
