"April", interview with the director Dea Kulumbegashvili Angelo Acerbi
“April” is the second feature film from Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili, in competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The main topic of the film is womanhood in a rural area where a female gynaecologist, Nina, is trying to help women to free form the heaviest imposition of patriarchy, risking her job in the process. but it is more than that, as the director tells us in this interview
Dea Kulumbegashvili, director of “April“, comes from the same area narrated in the film, she was child of a teenage mom: basically her preparation for the film unconsciously started very back in the past.
The astounding visuals of “April” are often enhanced by simple steady shots of nature. Dea Kulumbegashvili explains the function of this choice, made both for the sake of the film and for herself
After a newborn dies during delivery, the morals and professionalism of an ob-gyn, Nina, come under scrutiny amid rumours that she performs illegal abortions for those in need.
