Director Amjad Abu Alala talks to us about his latest feature film, You Will Die at 20, presented in the Giornate degli Autori section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival, which FRED Film Radio is media partner of. Abu Alala grew up in Dubai but went back for a lengthy production process in Sudan to make this movie, and he explains why in this interview. He also talks about some of the significance of You Will Die at 20, as well as its tone of hopefulness and whether he things about death, one of the central themes implied in the title, often.
You Will Die at 20: Sudan, province of Aljazira, the present. Shortly after Muzamil was born, a prophecy by the holy man of the village predicts that he will die at age 20. Muzamil’s father cannot stand the curse and leaves home. Sakina raises her son as a single mother, overly protective. One day, Muzamil turns 19.
