This group interview has been recorded after a panel discussion at the Sydney Film Festival Hub where Nafiss Nia, director and screenwriter of That Afternoon, Álfrún Helga Örnólfsdóttir, director and screenwriter of Band, Asimina Proedrou, director and screenwriter of Behind the Haystacks, Marta Savina director and screenwriter of The girl from tomorrow, Anna Hints, director and screenwriter of Smoke sauna sisterhood participated to the panel discussion Voices from Europe, in conversation with Screen International’s Sandy George, discussing their different approaches to filmmaking and how the landscape for women working in film varies across the continent. In the interview Álfrún, Asimina, Marta and Anna discuss their films, the stories they wanted to tell and their experience as female filmmakers in their own countries. Their features and documentaries span everything from personal stories to fiction and explore battling the patriarchy while trying to remain a truthful to themselves, tearing down sexist traditions, and fighting gender and age bias as well.

Voices of Women in Film’s class of 2023: Milena Aboyan, Malene Choi, Claire Dix, Anna Hints, Carmen Jaquier, Tia Kouvo, Nafiss Nia, Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir, Asimina Proedrou and Marta Savina. In 2023, these 10 female filmmakers join the 70-plus before them who’ve stood in the celebratory spotlight that this essential Sydney Film Festival program strand has highlighted annually since 2016. The Sydney Film Festival runs in Sydney in several venues across the city from 7th to 18th June.
