Juliette Binoche, an icon of international cinema, takes on the esteemed role of Jury President at the 78th Festival de Cannes, marking a historic milestone in her four-decade-long career.

Juliette Binoche, one of the most revered figures in international cinema, has been appointed President of the Jury for the 78th Festival de Cannes. Precisely 40 years after her first appearance on La Croisette, the acclaimed French actress will oversee the prestigious panel awarding the coveted Palme d’Or on May 24, 2025. Binoche follows in the footsteps of American director Greta Gerwig, marking the second consecutive time a woman in film has passed on this distinguished honour to another.

A Journey from Aspiring Actress to Jury President

Reflecting on this milestone, Binoche shared her emotions: “I’m looking forward to sharing these life experiences with the members of the Jury and the public. In 1985, I walked up the Steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility and the absolute need for humility.”

Her career began with André Téchiné’s Rendez-vous, which premiered in Cannes in 1985. This film ignited a path of artistic exploration, leading to nearly 70 films. Her career choices have consistently defied conventions, embracing projects across cultures, languages, and genres.

A Career of Global Influence

Juliette Binoche’s illustrious filmography is a testament to her boundless artistic appetite. She has collaborated with some of the greatest directors worldwide, including Michael Haneke, David Cronenberg, Olivier Assayas, Leos Carax, Claire Denis, Naomi Kawase, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Hou Hsiao-hsien. One of her most celebrated performances was in Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, a film that exemplifies her ability to transcend borders and cultures. Her portrayal in the film earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes in 2010.

A Multi-Faceted Artist

Binoche’s talents extend beyond the silver screen. She has left her mark on television (The Staircase, The New Look), theatre (with Ivo van Hove), dance (in collaboration with Akram Khan), music (alongside Alexandre Tharaud), and even painting. Her career choices reflect an insatiable curiosity and a fearless pursuit of artistic challenges.

A Committed Citizen and Advocate

Beyond her artistic endeavours, Juliette Binoche passionately advocates for social and environmental causes. She has used her platform to champion human rights, support undocumented immigrants, and protest injustices in the film industry. In Cannes, she famously opposed the imprisonment of Iranian director Jafar Panahi. Now serving as the President of the European Film Academy, she continues to push for necessary reforms within the film industry, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Carrying Forward a Legacy of Female Leadership

Binoche’s appointment as Jury President places her in a distinguished lineage of women who have shaped the history of the Festival de Cannes. The role has previously been held by icons such as Olivia de Havilland and Sophia Loren. As she steps into this esteemed position, she embodies the spirit of those before her while continuing to forge her path.

With her deep appreciation for cinematic artistry and an unwavering dedication to truth in storytelling, Juliette Binoche’s leadership at the 78th Festival de Cannes promises to celebrate cinema in its most profound and inspiring form.
