Luis De Filippis - Something you said last night #ZFF2022 fredfilmradio
PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Luis De Filippis, director of the film Something you said last night.
For her debut feature film, Something youi said last night, screening in the feature film competition at the 18th Zurich Film Festival,Luis De Filippis chooses to portray a Canadian-italian family during their holidays. The film doesn’t want to focus on one of its protagonists,Renata (Carmen Madonia), being a transgender woman but instead on the family dynamics with their defects and their positive aspects. While not pointing all her attention on Madonia, still manages to depict all the struggles and fights a transgender woman has to go through nowadays. Something you said last night is a film where silences speak louder than words.
Something you said last night: Italian-Canadian Ren goes on vacation with her parents and younger sister, Siena. Her family doesn’t know that the twenty-something transwoman has recently lost her job. Ren tries to cope with a resort geared towards retirees and her parents’ lovingly arrogant ways, while her sister keeps them all on their toes with her rebellious outbursts. Knowing that Ren will be even more dependent on her parents for support after the holidays, the vacation home feels increasingly like it’s shrinking. Luis de Filippis tells in this refreshingly cliché-free movie of family dynamics and explores a Millennial’s contradictory desire to be independent yet cared for.
