PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Ciro Guerra, Mark Rylance and Gana Bayarsaikhan, director and actors of the film Waiting For Barbarians.

In his first english language film, Waiting for Barbarians, Colombian director Ciro Guerra chose to adapt nobel prize winner J.M. Coitzee’s novel. The film is competing for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice Film Festival and it is set at the border of an empire ina undefinite time and moment in history. It started being an allegory on the past but the more Ciro Guerra worked on the film, the more realized that the film was a metaphor for describing what we’re living today with xenofobia and the inability of accepting who’s different from us. Mark Rylance and Johnny Depp are antagonists in the story while Gana Bayarsaikhan plays the “barbarian” woman who could be seen as a victim but represents instead an unusual strength.

Waiting For Barbarians: A magistrate, administrator of an isolated frontier settlement on the border of an unnamed empire, looks forward to an easy retirement until the arrival of colonel Joll, whose task it is to report on the activities of the barbarians and on the security situation on the border. Joll conducts a series of ruthless interrogations. The treatment of the barbarians at his hands and the torture of a young barbarian woman combine to lead the magistrate to a crisis of conscience and a quixotic act of rebellion.
