Morgan Bushe had a great time doing this film and we can tell it from the passion he talks about it. Being a slapstick comedy with a dark side, with a small budget, it has been a challenge every day but the crew made its best to have a perfectly working comic machine. We wonder in our talk with Morgan how come Ireland has a solid tradition of black comedies, and why every comedy they make has a dark side to it that pops out, at some point. We are not sure to have found the reason for it, though.
The Belly of the Whale: After breaking free from his foster family, Joey Moody returns penniless to Laytown, a rural Irish town just over the horizon, in a bid to reclaim his family’s caravan park and find his best friend and drinking partner, Lanks. Meanwhile, on a mission to find the money to pay for his sick wife’s medication, Ronald Tanner, risks his meager life savings on a get rich quick scheme that ends in abject failure. When Joey accidentally burns down Ronald’s camper van, the odd pair find themselves bonded together in misfortune. In a desperate attempt to solve their problems they concoct a slapdash plan to rob the local amusement arcad.
