For his third film after La La Land, Damien Chazelle has chosen again Ryan Gosling as his protagonist to tell the story of Neil Armstrong and his landing on the moon in 1969. With First Man, Chazelle is again assigned the difficult but beautiful task of opening a festival, the 75th Venice Film Festival as he did with La La Land two years ago. As the film is based on Armstrong’s biography, Chazelle declares that his interest was also to look into a man’s journey through loss, grief adn what it takes to achieve big things. Gosling admits that he was the one to convince Chazelle into focusing more on the personal life of Neil Armstrong more than his public persona’s moments. He pitched the film to Chazelle as the Kitchen and the Moon to hightlight the fact that it would have been more interesting to understand the “behind-the-scenes” moments of the man who first walked the moon’s surface. Claire Foy plays Armstrong’s wife Janet and reveals how Chazelle made her and Gosling rehearse as a real married couple by actually living together for some days.

First Man is the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie explores the sacrifices and the cost – on Armstrong and on the nation – of one of the most dangerous missions in history.
