“Conversation with” at the 20th Marrakech IFF, interview with actor Willem Dafoe Bénédicte Prot
PODCAST | Bénédicte Prot interviews György Kristóf, director of the film Out.
Slovaquian director György Kristóf, who has previously collaborated with such directors as Kevin Macdonald, Mark Herman, and the latest Berlin Golden Bear winner, Ildikó Enyedi, explains why he chose, in this debut film, to follow a character who belongs to the generation of his parents. He describes Agoston’s journey further and further ‘out” as a journey of self-discovery but also of personal enjoyment, and unveils a few sources of inspiration for the many odd but endearing characters Agoston meets, as well as for the magnificent cinematography (esp. in the industrial scenes), and the recurrent rabbit motif in this absurd, very entertaining existential tale, fruit of a rather challenging multilingual Eastern European shoot.
Out: after Agoston, a Slovaquian naval plant worker in his 5Os, is amongst the unlucky ones in a wave of redundancies, he sets off on his first trip abroad, to Latvia and the Baltic Sea, to try and find work, and himself. On this journey, he meets a series of absurd, colourful characters. With this debut feature combining poetic humour and a truly superb cinematography, György Kristóf is amongst the contenders for the prestigious Caméra d’or.
