Jakub Felcman – founder – Ostrava Kamera Oko
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews the director of the Ostrava Kamera Oko, Jakub Felcman. This year’s edition of the festival is the 7th in its history.
It hasn’t been easy, and he tells us of the challenges such a festival faced and is consistently facing in its uneasy task of promoting a different kind of cinema in an industrial Czech town. The challenges, however, are constantly overcome, and that is what has ensured the resilience of Ostrava Kamera Oko, which is quite a different type of festival.
As its name implies, it promotes the work of cinematographers, and rather than invite directors to talk about the film, it invites directors of photography to share stories of the works from their point of view. Despite this fact might hint at Ostrava Kamera Oko being niche, nothing could be further from the truth, as its programme offers a variety of titles that have been celebrated throughout the year, and can tend to a wide audience that goes beyond the ones with a particular interest in cinematography.
Jakub also talks to us about some of the activities that take place outside of the film programme, and shares with us a great story of how one of the cinemas in which the festival takes place was made out of a building that was unused and supposed to be demolished.
From 25th September to 1st October, Ostrava will attract the attention of fans of quality cinema. The seventh edition of the International Film Festival Ostrava Kamera Oko (OKO) will offer an eventful film programme including several Czech premieres, interesting guests and an inspirational atmosphere.
