FRED AT SCHOOL is a creative and innovative project with great potential for enhancing film literacy among young audiences.
By using radio in a fresh, stimulating way, this project aims to increase awareness about European films. It also aims to engage and educate the next generation of European moviegoers. The project has the additional benefit of being truly multilingual and multicultural, incorporating the use of radio as a creative tool by students in European schools. The project will provide accessible versions of films so that those with sensory impairment can also be engaged and educated.

EUROPEAN DIMENSION
FRED AT SCHOOL is an educational project presented by FRED Film Radio in the Creative Europe programme, with the objective of raising awareness about European films among young people.
It has been conceived for secondary schools and is being adopted in a number of European countries.
The project aims to promote film education by means of screenings in schools, supported by radio programmes in a number of European languages, which will be used as an alternative way to enhance film literacy.
DEGREE OF INNOVATION NEW TECHNOLOGIES
The project will promote film education with screenings in schools, supported by internet radio – the radio will be used as an alternative way to promote film literacy in most European languages. Students will also be involved in the creation of radio content in their own native language. It is therefore a film literacy project which also includes training in effective film radio communication.
Each film will be shown by means of a VOD platform created for the purpose, through which the students will enter a vast, virtual cinema theatre together with their colleagues from other European countries.
METHODOLOGY (FLIPPED CLASSROOM)
Students will be required to listen to the supplied educational audio clips on the subject of film before class, at home or in their own time. After a number of lessons covering the basics of film literacy, students will attend monthly screenings at school (4 films will be watched in class with a teacher). The same film will be shown on the same day in all the schools taking part in the project in all the EU countries concerned, with the intention of producing reportage/radio content as the project continues.
After each screening, the teacher will hold a class discussion: students will be asked to discuss a range of issues, such as the aspects they found most striking, any cultural diversity they observed and the parts that impressed them most. The intention will be to reach agreement by the end of the session on the 4 points that students believe will make a lasting impression on any potential audience.
FILM LITERACY AND MEDIA LITERACY (RADIO LITERACY)
These points will be recorded by the students in an audio clip, to be sent to the national radio coordinator, that will be used in a dedicated radio program hosted by the FRED radio channel in their native language. A shorter version of the audio clip will also be recorded in English.
CINEMA AS A TOOL TO PROMOTE CULTURAL EXCHANGE
The films shown within the project will be European films (LUX Prize shortlist by the European Parliament) that have been chosen from among recent films depicting each country’s contemporary life and culture.
All films will be shown in the original language with subtitles.
RESEARCH ON FILM LITERACY AMONG EUROPEAN STUDENTS (UNIVERSITAT AUTÒNOMA DE BARCELONA)
FRED AT SCHOOL incorporates research into the level of film literacy among European students. At the start of the project, and after each screening, students will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about the film and their perception of it.
COMPLETELY INCLUSIVE PROJECT
All the films will be made accessible to students with visual or hearing impairments so that the project will be completely inclusive. Accessible versions of the films (subtitles for the deaf and audio description for the blind) will be produced and students with sensory impairments will be able to enjoy the films together with the other students by listening to the audio description or reading the subtitles on a smartphone/tablet available in the classroom.
FINAL CONFERENCE
A final conference will be organized, bringing together all the partners, film literacy experts, filmmakers and a number of students, in order to discuss the results from the questionnaires and the radio programmes.
This will be an opportunity to judge the effectiveness of the dissemination of film literacy.
SELECTED SCHOOLS
Participating schools will make up an exclusive sample that will be used to assess the level of film literacy among the young people of Europe. The information collected will be processed and the results will be used by the European Commission in order to develop policies for the promotion of European cinema. Results may be used also by others industry players.
Every participating school will create its own radio programme for each film shown, which will be broadcast on FRED Film Radio and made available as a podcast.
All the participating schools will be mentioned in a national radio programme on each film, in an international programme in the English language and in a final conference where the results will be presented, in which some of the most outstanding students will be able to take part.
